Committee Decisions

Now there's a phrase with a stigma, huh? There's good reason for 'committee decision' to have some negative connotations, after all. One need only to look at some of the design monstrosities out of the big three North American auto manufacturers or the scripts of most big-budget Hollywood movies to see that giving everybody a say on the basis of their investment (usually financial investment, to be precise) rather than their expertise, for one to see the truth in this belief.
BUT - what if the 'investment' is purely artistic? And expert? I've made it a point over the last couple of decades to work with musicians whose musical opinions I respect, if not necessarily agree with. It's only natural that there will be differences of opinion; which leads to the quandary - do I dig in my heals and say 'this is my song, please play it the way wrote it', do I hand everything over for my bandmates to add their stamp, or do we do everything on a case-by-case basis? A lot of bands don't survive the dilemma (the Police come to mind first...Floyd second), and some bands become one mastermind with an orbit of near no-names (this brings to mind the Cars, Dire Straits and Boston, if you don't count the late great Brad Delp). Many years ago, I got into the habit of gritting my teeth and trying out bandmates' ideas - not just for a quick run-thru to discount the idea as quickly as possible, but to let the ideas take root. I must admit - sometimes the ideas grew on me better than my original vision. The Mike Luno Band has been a 3-piece band for quite some time now, so there are few voting deadlocks, but I hugely value the opinions of Curtis and Trevor - and I can't think of a 'committee decision' we've made that I'm not proud of, which is more than I can say for my own catalogue of ideas!
Of course, if we try our hand at a movie script or this decade's Pinto, I might feel differently - but at least it wouldn't be a very high bar to clear...
